Poliomyelitis.
Findings:
Hypoplasia of left half of ilium, left half of pubic bone , left proximal femur with osteoporosis involving left side of pelvis and femur. atrophy of pelvic and thigh muscles on left side.
Discussion:
Chronic disuse of limb on affected site in polio causes hypoplasia , disuse osteoporosis of pelvic bone and fatty atrophy of pelvic girdle muscles. Fatty infiltration involves abnormal deposition of fat diffusely within a muscle. Fatty infiltration occurs in the late stages of many pathologic conditions involving skeletal muscle. Pathologic fatty infiltration is usually seen in association with muscle atrophy.
